The Bird Model 43P is a field-ready wattmeter built on the foundation of the legendary Model 43—now equipped to read true peak power. Designed for measuring amplitude-varying signals such as AM and SSB, the 43P adds a peak-reading kit to the original mechanical design, enabling technicians to capture both average and peak forward power with confidence.
Rugged, analog, and element-compatible, the 43P delivers extended insight without sacrificing the simplicity RF pros rely on.
Measures peak forward power with ±8% full-scale accuracy—ideal for AM, SSB, or modulated RF systems.
Retains the same analog meter movement, plug-in element system, and rugged housing as the Model 43 wattmeter.
Easily swap connector types without tools or adapters to match system requirements on the go.
The Model 43P features an internal peak reading kit that captures and holds the highest instantaneous RF voltage sampled by the directional coupler.
This added capability helps ensure transmitters are operating at intended peak output without guesswork.
Get Expert HelpThe Model 43P can measure peak RF power on pulsed signals with a minimum duty cycle of 2%, a repetition rate of at least 100 pulses per second (pps), and a minimum pulse width of 200 microseconds.
The Model 43P includes a side-mounted switch that lets you select between CW (average) and peak power measurement modes. Simply set the switch to your desired mode and read the power directly from the analog meter—no additional setup required.
In peak mode, it accurately captures modulation envelopes from voice audio or rectangular pulse signals, provided the signal meets the minimum requirements:
To measure peak power, press the on/off switch located on the right side of the meter. When the red LED is lit, the 43P is in peak mode.
To return to CW (average) power mode, press the switch again—the LED will turn off.
Because the peak detector has a response time of about one second, you may notice a brief delay before the meter reading stabilizes, especially when the transmitter is keyed or unkeyed. In voice-modulated systems, the needle may fluctuate slightly (typically 2–3 scale divisions) as the detector tracks changes in the signal's envelope.
Keeping equipment calibrated is the number one way to ensure performance and longevity. A Bird Calibration means we fully test your equipment and adjust it as needed to ensure it’s meeting specs.
For decades, Bird’s element-based wattmeters have set the standard for accuracy, durability, and technician-trusted performance. That legacy continues—but so does the evolution.
Whether you prefer the familiar reliability of plug-in elements or you're exploring the ease of new generation RF power measurement, Bird is here to support your journey.
Our expanding lineup of RF power measurement tools offers options for every workflow—rooted in accuracy, built for what’s next.
Because in RF, confidence doesn’t come from guessing. It comes from Bird.
