Short-Open-Load (SOL) and Short-Open-Load-Through (SOLT) Calibration Standards are used for field calibration of RF equipment.
A proper calibration standard is vital for ensuring consistency and precision for your RF equipment. Bird supplies both SOL and SOLT standards that are built to be rugged, reliable, and easy to use.
Bird Calibration Combos are SOL standards bonded together as a single item. This makes it easy to perform field calibrations on SiteHawks and VNAs, and hard to lose or drop your precision equipment.
Bird Calibration Kits add a Through standard for added precision when calibrating 2+ port VNAs. Some include SOL Cal Combo, while others include separated SOL standards.
Bird Electronic Calibration modules are designed to work with Bird Vector Network Analyzers and automate the field calibration process, allowing you to take measurements faster, without swapping standards.

While you may reason that there is no immediate need for calibration since your VNA came calibrated from the factory, there is a difference between a factory calibration and a measurement or field calibration. Factory calibration verifies instrument performance with the possibility of adjusting internal coefficients so the instrument meets and maintains its published specifications. A measurement calibration extends your instrument's reference plane to account for cables, connectors, adapters, fixtures, and minor offsets.
Bird electronic calibration (ECal) modules are designed to simplify the calibration process of Bird VNAs. A single connection enables the VNA to compensate for directivity, source match, frequency response, and reflection tracking errors.
Manual calibration standards perform the same function as ECal modules without the automation. You simply must manually change the connections to your VNA.
Just like your instruments require regular factory calibrations, your calibration standards require regular calibrations themselves. This ensures they continue to meet specifications and perform properly.
Without a calibration standard to perform measurement/field calibrations, measurements from a SiteHawk or VNA are unreliable. Measurement calibration is a fundamental practice for removing systematic errors that stem from diverse setups and internal drift.
Keeping a calibration standard on hand, or 2 if you're prone to dropping or losing them, is good measurement practice.
